BECOME A POWERFUL PERSON

Each of us must model integrity, and the making and keeping of our commitments. As we strive toward our goals these are among the basic principles for enriching our lives and those around us. Powerful people can be role models for all of us. It takes courage to model integrity, to live with the courage of your convictions. It takes a great deal of heart to transform yourself and to take a stand that’s unpopular. There is an often repeated quote by Herbert Bayard Swope that says, “I can’t give you a sure-fire secret for success, but I can give you a formula for failure: try to please everybody all the time.” Powerful people have realized that they’re not consensus takers and have gathered the courage to move toward what they believe are the right goals.

Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Cowardice asks the question, is it safe? Expediency asks the question, is it politic? Vanity asks the question is it popular? But conscience asks the question, is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it is right.”

Even though people might not like you for the stand that you take, they will respect you for that stand. When I was serving in the Ohio State Legislature, one of the things I admired most about the Speaker of the House was that even when you disagreed with him on an issue that was very close to him, he respected you because you were consistent. He recognized your strong feelings regarding your position and respected your taking a stand for them. He might want your vote very much, but he respected people who did not compromise their positions—who took that stand because that’s what they felt within their heart. You have the capacity to do that, to be powerful in all of the relationships in your life, be it in the work environment or in your family.

When I had to make a decision regarding my son, I remembered reading something that Betty Davis said, “In order to be a very good parent, you’ve got to be willing to be comfortable with your children hating your guts.” If we need our children to love us all the time, we make concessions we ordinarily would not make. In many cases, we are doing them a disservice because we’re not making the kind of firm, strong, courageous decisions that will ultimately help them have the right direction they need in order to manifest their own inherent greatness.

When we ask how can I become a more powerful person, one of the most fundamental things is to have the courage to be true to yourself. Find the courage to do that which is right because it is the right thing to do, not because everybody else is going to agree with you or like you. Everybody is not going to like you. In fact, even
